Judge dinners
We have returned from San Diego. Yesterday we came home around 5 pm, did internet stuff for a couple of hours, went to bed and slept for 4 hours, woke up, chatted on IRC for 3 hours, and then slept for 12. Good stuff.
Yesterday something weird happened at the airport: I was recognized by a random German lady, who had seen me at GP Amsterdam! She was a mostly casual player whose boyfriend was interested in becoming a judge. She did an excellent job of keeping us awake while waiting for our (delayed) flight.
The official judge dinner at PTSD took place at Buca di Beppo. I didn't enjoy this dinner as much as I have enjoyed some other dinners - the food wasn't anything special, and the place was just too loud. Of course I want to talk to my fellow judges too, but I'd like to do it at a normal voice level. It must be pretty annoying for the waiters to have a room with 50 people in it, all yelling at the same time and not paying attention to what you're saying. It must also be extremely annoying for the other customers.
Another issue is the consumption of alcohol at judge dinners. I'm not against it - if you want beer or wine with your meal, you should have some. However, the judge dinner shouldn't be a drinking event. Not all judges are drinkers. When I'm not drinking myself, I find loud drunken people extremely annoying. The drinking and yelling can happen later, at a facility designed for that purpose, so that the people who want to avoid it can avoid it.
It's probably impossible to have a nice quiet dinner with 50 people who all want to talk to each other, but we could at least try to turn down the noise a bit.
