We appreciate your patience

This is the tale of our epic journey from Helsinki to San Diego.

Our airport shuttle arrived on time, and the driver got us to the airport on time, despite being a little confused about what terminal we wanted. That was the last time things went right. We tried to exchange US dollars at the airport bank, but for some reason they couldn't accept any plastic, and the line to the cash machine was too long. We decided to take care of that later.

The flight to Munich was mostly fine. We enjoyed a breakfast of bread, cold cuts and a single cherry tomato! In Munich, our flight boarded exactly at the announced time. Once everyone was ready to go, the pilot announced that there was a technical problem. Almost an hour later, he announced that they had located and fixed a smoke detector that was in one of the cargo holds. Unfortunately, the cargo hold also contained a dog that now couldn't stay there because the heating wasn't working. Then they took another 45 minutes or so to figure out how to transport the dog without freezing it to death.

Inflight entertainment review!

"Wild Hogs" - I didn't really watch this movie about four middle-aged guys in leather jackets, but Pasi tells me it had a lot of gay jokes.

"Music and Lyrics" - Hugh Grant plays himself as a has-been popstar, Drew Barrymore is the weird girl he falls for. The song lyrics they write pretty much suck, but the opening sequence (80s music video parody) and the Cora (Britney Spears substitute) character are pretty amusing.

"Freedom Writers" - Hilary Swank earns a divorce from McDreamy while teaching English to gang kids and fighting her evil colleagues.

"Me and Mr. Darcy" (a novel) - Utterly predictable, but I'm a sucker for P&P rewrites.

The flight landed in Los Angeles about 1,5 hours late. We rushed through immigration and customs, and some guy at the transit desk told us he was rebooking our connecting flight. Of course, he gave us a flight that would leave in 45 minutes. And he didn't actually put us on the flight, which we found out after finally finding an agent that could check us in. Luckily, this agent was very helpful, efficient and dyslexic, because the gate number she told us was not one that was on our boarding passes (luckily, we noticed this on time). At the security check, the guards of course decided that they should do "extra screening" on the two people who were most obviously in a hurry. We made our flight with 10 minutes to spare.

We arrived at San Diego commuter terminal 35 minutes later, but our luggage didn't. There was nobody at the United lost luggage desk. Some 15 minutes later, a luggage person finally showed up, and told us that they put our stuff on the next flight because there was already too much stuff on our flight. So we had to wait another 40 minutes for our luggage.

We got a taxi. The driver stared at the address I gave him for a while, and informed us that there was a free shuttle for this hotel. However, we were in no mood to wander around airports any more, so we took the taxi anyway.

We went to bed at around 10 pm, and here I am writing this post at 5 am because I can't sleep anymore. Yay.
